Night to day loungewear collection for women on the go with an emphasis on skin health.
Background
Fleeting Life is a sleepwear/lounge collection intended for S/S 2027. This collection is designed for the liminal hours, those first 15 minutes after the alarm, when you're already late but somehow still wrapped in the warmth of home. Fleeting Life provides a a night to day addition to any working woman’s wardrobe.
Inspired by the tension between the urge to go and the desire to stay, the pieces are crafted in a dreamy Pima cotton-modal blend, soft enough to sleep in and polished enough to step out. With a color story that clashes the city with the comfort of your home, this collection is for the woman who lives in transition: quick exits, long mornings, tender pauses, and all the moments in between.
Problem
With the steady growth of the loungewear market reflecting the rise of athlesure in the late 2010’s, much of the current loungewear range prioritizes trend over long-term comfort and skin health. Many brands rely on synthetic fabrics that can irritate, trap heat, and fail to provide the emotional ease consumers increasingly seek through self-care practices. There is a need for sleepwear that marries natural materials with thoughtful design, offering both physical comfort and deeper cultural resonance.
Research
This project began with fabric research into cotton–modal jersey blends, which are widely used in Italian sleepwear for their durability, breathability, and resistance to pilling. Testing confirmed that the 50/50 Peruvian Pima cotton–modal blend maintained softness and color retention even after repeated laundering, while supporting moisture management and skin comfort. Additional research into trims prioritized minimizing synthetics, leading to the use of deadstock cotton lace, cloth-covered buttons, and woven elastic as healthier, more sustainable alternatives to standard polyester-based notions.
This fabric research informed the market research into whitespaces in the loungewear market, concluding in findings that the market is projected to grow $12.4 billion in 2023 to $22.3 billion by 2030, at a rate of 8.7% with gaps in the night to day market.
Goals
Design sleepwear that is transitional from day to night.
Construct the collection in skin safe materials and design garments that do not define themselves as pj’s.
Ideation
Using inspiration such as Mark Flood’s lace paintings, Soviet abandoned apartments, and traditional bedding pieces such as comforters and ruched sheet edges, and street sign colors these designs were made to reflect the juxtaposition between intimacy and structure, grounding the designs in both comfort and cultural depth.
